And the Survey Says: Sony is ‘Best Brand’

Sony has been named as the “best brand” for the seventh consecutive year in an annual consumer poll conducted by research company Harris Interactive, Inc.

Some 50% of the Top 10 brands named represented electronics products, three automakers and two consumer and packaged goods. Dell retained its No. 2 spot, while Coca-Cola, previously in the fourth position, inched up to the No. 3 spot.

Others on the Top 10 list are Toyota (No. 4), Ford (No. 5), Honda (No. 6), Hewlett-Packard (No. 7), General Electric (No. 8), Kraft Foods (No. 9) and Apple (No. 10). Two brands dropped off the list this year, General Motors and Microsoft.

Brands that received a substantial number of mentions but not enough to make the Top 10 include Chevrolet, Panasonic, Pepsi-Cola, Nike and Maytag.

Versus last year, most of the brands did not move up or down substantially. The most notable change is Kraft Foods, which fell from No. 3 to No. 9 and General Motors, which dropped from its No. 8 position to No. 17.

In June, Rochester, NY-based Harris Interactive conducted an online poll of 2,351 U.S. adults asking them to think about brands or names of products and services they know. They were then asked which three brands they considered were the best. Each consumer’s response was unaided and a list of brands to choose from was not provided.
