Wisconsin consumers, faced with a Dec. 1 deadline, rushed to sign up for the state’s new do-not-call list during Thanksgiving week.
More than 20,000 people signed up per day, and officials expected that more than 2 million would sign up by the Sunday deadline—double the state’s expectations, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Officials predicted that half the residential phone lines in the state would end up on the list. By midweek, upwards of 900,000 phone numbers were on the file, the Journal Sentinel reported.
The numbers will remain on the list until Dec. 31, 2004.
The new law, which goes into effect on Jan. 1, mandates a fine of $100 apiece for unsolicited calls.
