Williams-Sonoma ’98 Sales Top $1 Billion: Cao Chantland to Resign

Housewares cataloger Williams-Sonoma Inc., San Francisco, reported net earnings of $54.9 million for the 52 weeks ended Jan. 31, an increase over the $41.4 million recorded a year earlier.

Mail order sales in fiscal 1998 grew slightly to $383.6 million over the previous year. Overall net sales for the fiscal year grew 18.3%, to $1.1 billion from $933.3 million in fiscal 1997.

But the company’s stock dropped $6.625, to $29.375, following the announcement that Chief Administrative Officer Dennis Chantland would retire effective July 1, according to reports.
