When Postmaster General Jack Potter outlines the U.S. Postal Service’s transformation plan at Washington’s National Press Club Friday, he’s likely to call for restructuring the USPS along the lines of other governmental corporations such as Fannie Mae which are owned by shareholders, according to industry sources familiar with the plan.
Potter will probably recommend the USPS maximize its ability under current laws to negotiate special agreements with mailers, outsource some services and institute new procedures for handling employee grievances.
“It sounds better than we expected,” said Gene Del Polito, president of Postcomm.
“Jack Potter has the intestinal fortitude to make the tough decisions like consolidating facilities,” added Neal Denton, executive director of the Alliance of Nonprofit Mailers. “I think we’ll be pleased with it.”
