USPS to Cut Another 12,000 Jobs: Potter

The Postal Service will reduce its workforce by another 12,000 positions through attrition during fiscal 2003 which began last month, Postmaster General Jack Potter told the service’s Board of Governors Tuesday.

About 23,000 employee positions reduced in fiscal 2002. The 2003 budget includes approximately $1 billion in cost reductions from other areas, he noted.

“Fiscal year 2003 will be the second year in our five-year commitment to take $5 billion out of our costs by 2006,” said Potter.

In addition, the USPS is seeking growth by enhancing existing products and services — and by expanding access and convenience to postal services, Potter said in a statement.

Beginning this month, the postal service is providing “Buy Stamps Here” decals to 60,000 ATM, grocery, and drug store locations across the country where individuals can purchase stamps.

Potter reiterated the USPS’s commitment to work closely with the Postal Rate Commission to forge negotiated service agreements with large mailers and to seek phased rate increases.
