USPS Gives Sneak Peek at Intelligent Mail Proposals

Posted on by Chief Marketer Staff

The U.S. Postal Service has posted an advance notice of rules it plans to propose in January about the implementation of its Intelligent Mail barcodes on Postal Explorer at pe.usps.com.

The USPS proposes requiring mailers to meet one of two options using Intelligent Mail barcodes to access automation prices for letters and flats, beginning Jan. 9.

The first option, Full Service Intelligent Mail, will require the use of unique barcodes applied to letter and flat mail pieces, trays, sacks and containers, such as pallets. This option also calls for the submission of electronic mailing documentation. The second option, or Basic Intelligent Mail, requires mailers only to apply barcodes on mail pieces and not on trays and containers.

Accordingly, starting in January, automation prices will no longer be available for the use of the Postnet barcode, according to the USPS.

The Postal Service expects to publish these proposals in the Federal Register during the first week of January.
