Seeking to avoid the ire heaved at corporate overindulgence, companies are rewarding high-performing employees (and customers) with prepaid incentive cards instead of luxury goods and travel. In a sign of the times, those cards are often being used to purchase everyday essentials. What categories were up and which were down? Here’s a peek at where people were using their Visa prepaid incentive cards across North America, according to an analysis by Scotiabank and Berkeley Payment Solutions:

Fast food restaurants (+107%)

Home furnishing and equipment stores (-44%)

Household essentials at discount stores (+37%)

Drug stores and pharmacies (+26%)

Grocery stores (+20%)

Department stores (-35%)

Family clothing stores (+79%)

Men’s and women’s clothing stores (+37%)

Women’s ready-to-wear stores (+33%)
