Taxi TV Battles To Stay In New York Cabs

Several manufacturers of promotional TV monitors that can be installed in the back seats of tax cabs filed a lawsuit in an attempt to keep New York City from removing the service from the city’s taxi fleets after a one-year trial.

Global Vision Interactive, Intell Marketing and several other companies filed for a temporary injunction in Manhattan Supreme Court on Aug. 29 to counter the Taxi and Limousine Commission, which had issued an order last month to fleet owners to remove the monitors. The judge refused to issue the restraining order and Global Vision Interactive and other companies dropped out of the lawsuit, Bruno Lucarelli, a spokesperson for Intell Marketing, said.

Intell Marketing and another manufacturer, Metroline, have filed an appeal. A court date is set for Sept. 17.

The order came down after an online survey revealed most passengers felt “indifference or negativity” toward the program.

Global Vision and Intell Marketing contend that the Taxi and Limousine Commission broke its contract and that the decision to pull the plug was made “without any hearing or reasonable investigation.

The monitors show looped ads for local merchants and services.
