Rep. Billy Tauzin (R-LA) plans to introduce an anti-spam bill this week, published reports said.
The legislation offers stiff penalties including fines up to $1.5 million and jail time up to two years for e-mailers who lie about their identities or use other deceptive tactics.
The bill calls for e-mail marketers to reveal their online and offline addresses and comply with opt-out requests.
The bill would supersede anti-spam state laws, which allow individuals to sue violators.
