Talbots 3Q Catalog Sales Drop 9%

Third quarter catalog sales for Talbots Inc. decreased 9% to $62.1 million from $68.2 million last year. Year-to-date, the firm reported a 9% drop in catalog sales to $179.1 million from $196 million.

Income for the quarter was $37.4 million, a 2% increase over $36.6 million one year ago. Sales increased 2% to $401.8 million, versus $393.9 million. Retail store sales increased 4% to $339.7 million from $325.7 million. The quarter ended Nov. 2.

For the 39-week period ended Nov. 2, income decreased 2% to $92.4 million, compared to $94.5 million. Sales decreased 1% to $1,163.5 million versus $1,179.3 million.

The firm plans to open 97 stores next year including its first six Talbots Mens’ stores. Talbots introduced the concept last month and sent out the first wave of 750,000 copies of its new men’s catalog early in October. The initial mailing targeted existing customers only. Talbots positioned the 24-page catalog at women who purchase clothing for the men in their lives.
