Sweepstakes Bill Sent to Clinton For Signature

Legislation requiring sweepstakes sponsors to make it plain that contestants don’t need to buy their products to win big prizes was approved by the Senate and sent to President Clinton for his signature Friday.

The bill, passed by voice, is aimed at protecting thousands of people who reportedly spend millions of dollars on magazine subscriptions and other products, they don’t want or don’t need in the mistaken hope they are increasing their chances of winning sweepstakes.

The Direct Marketing Association supports this bill said spokesman Steve Altobelli, noting its similarity to a bill recently passed by the House.
