The Communication Workers’ Union, the U.K. postal workers organization, said Wednesday it plans to step up its strike against Royal Mail.
In addition to the two-day walkout in the next two weeks, the union said there would be two weeks of continuous disruption to mail services.
This follows a two-day strike that was set to begin July 12 and now the union seeks to heighten the pressure on Royal Mail, which it says is ” unwilling to engage in any meaningful negotiations.”
Royal Mail said it wouldn’t be able to collect mail during the strike and urged them to mail on other days. But if they couldn’t, Royal Mail encouraged them to bring their mailings directly to their local post centers.
Workers walked out for 24 hours on June 29 in the first national postal strike for 11 years in protest at Royal Mail’s 2.5% pay increase offer and plan to cut 40,000 jobs (Direct Newsline, July 12).
