Sportsman’s Guide Cuts Catalog Volume, Sales Drop

The Sportsman’s Guide Inc., South St. Paul, MN, has reported sales of $30.7 million for the quarter ended march 31, compared to $38.4 million one year ago.

The company cited a decrease in catalog circulation and low response rates for the decline.

Internet sales increased to 13% of the total net sales compared to 4% last year.

As part of its year long strategy to improve profitability the company has reduced it catalog mail volume eliminating unprofitable specialty catalog editions and mailings to unprofitable segments of its house file. In the first quarter, circulation was down about 20% compared to last year. The decreased mailing has lead to a reduction in selling and general and administrative expenses by close to $1.5 million.

The company also reported a lost of $922,000 compared to net earnings of $428,000 for the same three month period one year ago.
