A majority of consumers say unsolicited e-mail volume has decreased and that they receive more relevant communications that they did a year ago, according to a survey by Bigfoot Interactive Inc.
Specifically, the poll found that:
* Fifty-seven percent of consumers agreed that the amount of spam they have received over the past year has decreased, while 39% disagreed and 4% had no response or didn’t know.
*The same number indicated that the e-mails they received from companies with which they do business are more targeted than those from those same companies last year. Thirty-five percent disagreed and 8% had no response or didn’t know.
The survey also found that: *Phishing attacks are difficult to recognize, with 34% of respondents saying they have received a fraudulent e-mail asking them to verify personal information. But just 32% said they were confident they could identify such an e-mail.
*Anti-spam software use is high, with 65% of respondents stating they currently use anti-spam filtering or challenge response software.
* Security concerns are pervasive, with 82% of respondents expressing concern about spyware as it relates to their online privacy, and 55% believing they have been infected with a spyware program.
The survey is based on 1,004 interviews age 18 years and older conducted from Feb. 18 – 20.
