A worker at the Hamilton Township, NJ mail processing center was diagnosed Sunday with inhalation anthrax, bringing the total number of postal employees from the location that have cultivated the disease to three. The other two, who had been diagnosed earlier, have a cutaneous, or skin-based, variety, which is considered less deadly.
Two employees at the Brentwood, MD post office, which has been closed for decontamination, were diagnosed with inhalation anthrax earlier this month.
Officials have not identified the most recently exposed worker. The employee has been hospitalized and is reported to be improving, according to wire reports. The announcement of this infection brings the total number of confirmed cases to 13, with five more suspected and 32 having been exposed without infection.
On Saturday the US Postal Service announced that it will test 30 additional processing centers for contamination, with another 200 slated for testing at an unspecified future time, according to reports. One of the branches being tested is the Gaithersburg facility, which had received some of the Brentwood mail after the Brentwood post office was closed.
Late Friday, the USPS confirmed that another Washington, DC area facility, the Southwest Post Office which serves ZIP code 20024, had tested positive for traces of anthrax.
