Retail/DM Shorts from August

JoS. A Banks Clothiers saw its August sales rise 4.6%, to $29.6 million up from $28.3 million in Aug. 2005. The men’s clothing chain’s comparable store sales fell 6.1%, but its combined catalog and Internet sales rose 17.4%. The Hampstead, MD-based company did not give specific figures for each of its channels.

Dallas-based Neiman Marcus Group generated $270 million in total revenue during the four weeks ended Aug. 26, up 7.4% from August 2005. Comparable store revenue was up 4.4%, but comparable revenue within the Neiman Marcus Direct division rose 19.3%. The top-selling merchandise categories within Neiman Marcus Direct included women’s apparel, shoes, handbags, jewelry and men’s items.

Pier 1 Imports Inc. reported $114.3 million in sales during the four weeks leading up to Aug. 26, down from $124 million a year ago. The Fort Worth, TX-based home furnishings and gifts marketer began distributing its autumn catalog earlier this week. Plans call for 12 million copies to be circulated. The new edition features dinnerwear, decorative accessories and new furniture.

Sharper Image Corp., San Francisco, generated $32.5 million in sales during August, down from $37.5 million in August 2005. Store sales fell from $23.8 million to $19 million, while catalog and direct sales rose to $8.5 million from $8.1 million. Internet sales slipped to $5 million from $5.6 million a year ago.
