Postal Service Reports $900 Million in Income

The U.S. Postal Service reported a net income of $900 million for the 2006 fiscal year that ended Sept. 30. Its total revenues were $72.8 billion, while total expenses were $71.9 billion, according to figures released at the postal Board of Governors meeting.

Total expenses for the post office increased 4.9% since last year. Fuel and transportation costs totaled roughly $1.7 billion. The total mail volume for fiscal 2006 was 213 billion pieces.

The next postage rate increase is anticipated to happen as soon as May 2007.
