Playboy Narrows Loss in Quarter

Playboy Enterprises, Inc. reported a net loss of $3.1 million for the second quarter, down from $8 million for the same period last year.

Revenue for the three months ended June 30 was $70.6 million, compared with $71.9 million during the same quarter last year.

The direct marketer and publisher attributed this shortfall to the sale of its Collectors’ Choice music catalog in last year’s fourth quarter.

The Chicago-based firm’s online group unit cut its quarterly loss to $2.9 million from $6 million last year. The unit includes e-commerce, subscription, international, advertising and online gaming operations.

In addition, higher revenue in entertainment and licensing businesses offset lower publishing revenue.
