Phishing Incidents Rise 42% in January, Says Group

Nearly 12,900 Internet users reported phishing attacks in January, a 42% increase over December, reported the Anti-Phishing Working Group. The group also found 2,560 Web sites had been used as platforms for phishing sorties, up 47% over the previous month

The report said that it appears the number of machines infiltrated by hackers is on the rise.

Phishing uses unsolicited e-mail messages that try to lure users into revealing their identity like Social Security and credit card numbers and other sensitive personal financial information.

The report also found that Phishers are luring customers of small banks instead of big ones, largely because bigger banks have put into place systems that can easily identify phishers.
