Penney’s August Catalog Sales Drop Nearly 25%

J. C. Penney Co. Inc. reported catalog sales of $186 million for the four weeks ended Aug. 24, off 24.7% from $247 million for the same period last year.

The firm attributed the falloff to “continued weakness in consumer demand.”

The cataloger and retailer reported total company sales of $2.5 billion for the month, down 1% from the month ended Aug. 25, 2001.

Last May, the company said it expected catalog sales to decline by 10% to 13% for the year, then to stabilize and begin to grow slowly.
