Online Holiday Spending Just Shy of $8 Billion

Consumers spent about $7.92 billion online this holiday season, up 23% from last year, according to market research firm BizRate.com. The 2002 holiday shopping season ran from Nov. 25 to Dec. 25.

[There were six fewer shopping days this year. When adding six days (Nov. 19-24, 2002) back in, current online holiday spending grew by 42.8% to $9.18 billion over holiday 2001’s $6.43 billion].

Online spending during the last weekend before Christmas (Dec. 21-22,) was million , a 92% gain over the same weekend in 2001.

For the third year in a row, women made the most online purchases and increased their share of buying to 60% from last holiday’s 56%.

In 1998, women accounted for only 39% of all online holiday transactions.
