OfficeMax Goes for Rubber Band-Ball Record

OfficeMax goes for a Guinness record today for the world’s largest rubber band ball to kick off the renovation schedule for its 887 stores.

OfficeMax is “sponsoring” the ball, created by Oregon resident Steve Milton and his six-year-old son Bryce. The partnership fits nicely with OfficeMax’s own rubber band ball logo. Milton’s ball is 19 feet wide and 5.5 feet tall. If it tops 3,120 pounds, it will break the standing world’s record.

OfficeMax also sponsors the ball’s appearance in the McDonald’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in Chicago, and will exhibit the ball throughout December and January at 14 Chicago-area stores, some of the first to be remodeled as part of OfficeMax’s turnaround plan.

Eleven Chicago stores are the first to adopt the chain’s “Advantage” format, geared to small-office and home-office shoppers. Stores are organized around a central hub, with boutique-style shopping areas including the OfficeMax Café and a Filling Station to refill printer ink cartridges (PROMO Xtra, Jan. 12, 2006). The Maccabee Group, Minneapolis, is handling the rubber band ball weigh-in and appearances.
