BIRKENSTOCK USA: Novato, CA, named Duncan/Channon its agency of record for the company’s iconic shoe brand. The San Rafael, CA-based agency will reposition Birkenstock with ads, P-O-P, catalogs and other consumer marketing. The brand has traditionally used trade promotion.
WAL-MART STORES: has bought Brazilian retail chain Sonae from Modelo Continente for about $757 million. The purchase includes Sonae’s 140 hypermarkets, supermarkets and wholesale units, and brings Wal-Mart’s operations in Brazil up to 295 stores in 17 of the country’s 26 states. Bentonville, AR-based Wal-Mart bought 118 Bompreco stores in northeastern Brazil from Ahold in 2004.
