Nearly 3 in 4 U.S. Android Smartphone Users Access Facebook Website or App via Their Phones

According to The NPD Group, almost 75 percent of Android smartphone users in the U.S. accessed Facebook’s app and website via their phones in March.

In March, nearly three-quarters of U.S. Android smartphone users accessed the social network’s app and website, making it the most used social networking app and website on the Android platform.

Twitter is second with 23 percent and 18 percent reach in Web and apps, respectively. Google+ is struggling to gain traction, with 16 percent reach in Web and a reach in apps that has floated between 10 percent and 15 percent for the past nine months, according to The NPD Group.

Social networking is one of the most utilized activities for U.S. Android smartphone users, second to search. Among apps, it ranks behind search, webmail, maps/navigation and games.

In March, Facebook users spent more than 15 minutes per day, or nearly 470 minutes for the entire month, using the Facebook app on their Android smartphones. Also, Facebook users opened the app an average of six times a day in March.

According to The NPD Group, Facebook’s website comprised 10 percent of all page views for Android smartphone users in March.

Separate numbers from Nielsen show that 58 percent of smartphone users’ time is spent with the top 50 apps, down from 74 percent last year.

Also, smartphone penetration stands at 50.4 percent, up from just 38 percent in 2011.

Nielsen noted that the average number of apps on a device is 41, up from 32 last year. Meanwhile, 88 percent of Android and iOS smartphone users are app downloaders, up from 74 percent in 2011.

This year, there are 84 million Android and iOS users, up from 38 million in 2011.

According to Experian Hitwise, Facebook received 9 percent of all U.S. Internet visits in April. Also, about 20 percent of page views in the U.S. occurred on Facebook.com.

The average visit time on Facebook.com is 20 minutes, and 96 percent of visitors to Facebook.com were returning visitors in April.
