Mother’s Day Drove Flowers/Gifts/Greetings Sites in May 2012

Mother’s Day had a big hand in determining which websites saw the biggest month-over-month growth in traffic, according to comScore. Meanwhile, Google Ad Network led the field by reaching 92.2 percent of Americans online.

According to comScore, DexOne was the top gaining online property, with a 38 percent month-over-month bump up in the number of unique visitors in May. It was followed by Dell with a 28 percent increases, NameMedia with a 25 percent increase, Liberty Media Holding Corporation with a 20 percent increase, Intergi Entertainment and Games with an 18 percent increase, SoundCloud.com with a 17 percent increase, Coolmath.com Inc. with a 17 percent increase, The Mozilla Organization with a 15 percent increase, Superpage.com Network with a 15 percent increase and ABC Television with a 14 percent increase.

When it came to the top 10 gaining site categories by percentage change in unique visitors, Retail -; Flowers/Gifts/Greetings led the way with a 23 percent month-over-month boost in its audience in May. ProFlowers.com led this category with 5.8 million visitors during the month, a 147 percent increase from the number of visitors it welcomed in April. AmericanGreetings Property followed with 3.7 million visitors, while Gifts.com had 3.4 million visitors, 1-800-Flowers.com Inc. had 2.6 million visitors (up 83 percent), PartyCity.com had 2.1 million visitors, FTD.com had nearly 2 million visitors (up 150 percent), Hallmark.com had 1.3 million visitors (up 21 percent) and Teleflora.com had 1.3 million visitors (up 168 percent).

Community -; Gay/Lesbian was the second top gaining property in May with a 15 percent increase in its audience, followed by Services – e-cards with an 8 percent boost, Retail – Food with an 8 percent boost, Health with a 7 percent boost, Retail – Jewelry/Luxury Goods/Accessories with a 7 percent boost, Community – Teens with a 7 percent boost, Games – Gaming Information with a 6 percent boost, Travel – Hotels/Resorts with a 6 percent boost, and Retail – Mall with a 5 percent boost.

“May began with millions of Americans turning to the Web to find the perfect gift or e-card for Mom in time for Mother’s Day,” said Jeff Hackett, executive vice president of comScore. “But by the end of the month they were ready to break out the grill for Memorial Day barbecues, generating a big increase in traffic to Food Retailer websites as consumers looked for specials, savings and recipe ideas.”

Google Sites was the top overall online property in the U.S. in May with an audience of 189 million unique visitors, followed by Yahoo Sites with 167 million visitors, Microsoft Sites with 164 million visitors, Facebook with 158 million visitors and AOL Inc. with 110 million visitors.

In May, there was a total of 221 million unique Internet visitors, according to comScore.

Meanwhile, Google Ad Network topped the comScore Ad Focus Ranking in May with a reach of 92.2 percent, followed by Rubicon Project REW Platform with a reach of 88.0 percent, AOL Advertising with a reach of 83.7 percent, Google with a reach of 82.5 percent and AT&T AdWorks with a reach of 81.1 percent.
