Michigan AG Warns of Wal-Mart Voucher Scam

The Michigan Attorney General is warning consumers about a telemarketing scheme that targets residents of his state with Wal-Mart shopping vouchers.

AG Mike Cox said that the offer of the vouchers is a fraudulent way to obtain consumers’ personal information and authorization to withdraw money from their bank accounts.

“I implore Michigan residents to resist, under all circumstances, providing personal information to someone you don’t know who calls on the telephone,” Cox said in a statement. “Time is of the essence in stopping this scam before many are victimized.”

Cox said that his office received complaints about telemaketers offering consumer vouchers valued up to $500. In return, the consumer agrees to pay a $4.95 shipping and handling fee. Consumers who gave out their account information discovered that withdrawals had been made associated with “Mega Movie Club, Net4Ever and Health Network Unlimited,” the AG said.

The withdrawals are being made in the form of demand drafts, which do not require a signature by the account holder before being cashed.
