Live from Washington, DC: Burton Lays Out Tough Solutions to Ailing Postal Service

Early retirement incentives, shuttering inefficient post offices and a move toward privatization are a few of the medicines necessary to correct the financially ailing United States Postal Service, representative Dan Burton (R-IN) told a crowd yesterday at the Government Affairs Conference in Washington, DC.

“The postal service is facing major operational and human challenges,” said Burton, who is chairman of the House Government Reform Committee.

He said that of the 43,000 post offices across the U.S., 23,000 are losing money and that anywhere from 8,000 to 15,000 should be shut down. “Every one of us is going to have a post office in our area close,” he said, referring to members of Congress.
