A Westborough, MA, company is introducing technology that serves ads as a PC owner is turning their computer on.
Turn On Media presents an ad during the time after hitting the “on” switch and before the computer is completely up and running. “It’s the time people normally go and get a cup of coffee, instead they’ll watch an ad,” Ian Cross, vice president of marketing told DIRECT Newsline yesterday.
Why would people want to have yet another moment of their day filled with advertising? Cross said many say they wouldn’t want to see an ad, but others admit they wouldn’t mind ads for things they are truly interested in, like an Amazon.com ad, for example.
Turn On Media tracks what time consumers turn on their PCs, what ad they viewed, and whether they clicked through to the advertiser’s Web site. (People click through by hitting “enter” because the mouse is not operational before the PC is fully on.) On the Web site, advertisers could then collect e-mail addresses and other information.
Turn On Media is talking to potential clients such as Internet service providers, advertising agencies and PC makers.
