Direct Marketing Association CEO and president H. Robert Weintzen told catalogers yesterday that to remain viable, they’ll have to fight the “three-headed monster” attacking the industry: privacy, use tax and postal reform.
“I am calling on all of you to write to Congress, send letter to your local newspapers and meet with your elected officials,” he said yesterday during a keynote address at the 18th annual Catalog Conference here. “Do whatever you can because the time to act is now.”
Weintzen noted that the DMA continues to work toward a financially viable Postal Service through reform legislation, which it drafted along with a coalition of labor and commercial mail groups. “The main thrust of our reform proposal is to view new revenue growth for the Postal Service in the contest of the Consumer Price Index.”
The DMA supports the bi-partisan Internet Tax Nondiscrimination Act introduced by Sen. Ron Wyden, said Weintzen, noting that the bill opens the door to substantial simplification of the nation’s more than 7,600 tax codes.
The Catalog Conference, cosponsored by the DMA and DIRECT Newsline’s sister publication Catalog Age, concludes on Thursday.
