Johnson & Johnson Signs “Historic” Olympic Deals

Johnson & Johnson has greatly expanded its relationship with the U.S. Olympic Committee and signed multiple deals to have its brands associated with the 2006 and 2008 games.

In addition to becoming the official healthcare products partner of the USOC, the company signed on July 26 as the official healthcare products sponsor of the Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games and as an official partner of the Beijing 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

J&J subsidiaries will also become the official healthcare products partner for more than 20 countries’ Olympic teams.

The deal with the USOC allows J&J to use the U.S. Olympic marks in all marketing and advertising activities to support Team USA’s efforts at the 2006 Winter Games and at the 2008 Olympic Games.

“This is an historic day for Johnson & Johnson as we make extensive, company-wide commitment to the Olympic Games,” said CEO William C. Weldon in a statement. “We are excited about the opportunity to deepen our strong, established ties in China, Italy, throughout Europe and the United States and around the world, through our business in consumer products, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices and diagnostics.”

The company did not announce activation plans or say which brands would be involved. However, the company said that it plans to conduct internal and external marketing programs to highlight the association with the Olympic Games across Europe and in Italy over the next seven months.

J&J’s past relationship with the USOC was for brand-specific partnerships, the company said.
