Internet Executive Dies–With Traffic Booming

The largest Internet tragedy that resulted from the hijackings is also the most ironic.

As the first uncertain news reports unfolded and telephones and cell phones failed, people turned to the Internet for news. Big news sites like CBS.com worried about their servers getting overloaded turned to Akamai Technologies Inc.. The Cambridge, MA-based company is a leader in providing the technology for high-volume and high-bandwidth Web sites. Akamai is a member of AIM.

An Akamai founder, Daniel C. Lewin, 31, was on one of the hijacked planes. Lewin was listed on a CBS news site as among the passengers killed when American Airlines Flight 11 en route from Boston to Los Angeles crashed into the first Twin Tower at about 8:45 AM. The plane was carrying 81 passengers, nine flight attendants and two pilots.

“The irony is the need for the company’s services–while their founder was lost in the tragedy,” said Ben Issacson of AIM.
