Copyblogger wants to share a secret: “There’s nothing new about ‘social media.'” The Internet has always been social. If you need some convincing, Copyblogger put together the following infographic for you. Here are some of the events included in the timeline:

  • The world’s first email message was sent in 1971
  • Meetup.com was created in 2001, in response to 9/11
  • Friendster launched in 2002 and became the first site of its kind to get 1 million users
  • Myspace launched in 2003 and got 1 million users in its first month
  • Google Buzz was unveiled in 2010 but failed
  • This year, Pinterest attained 10 million users faster than any other standalone site in history
