If it’s in the news, e-mail scammers will find a way to attempt to exploit it.
The United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team is warning of a phishing scam that claims to be from the Internal Revenue Service offering recipients payments from a federal government stimulus package.
No such package has passed. The IRS doesn’t contact U.S. citizens by e-mail.
“These emails include text that attempts to convince users to follow a link to a Web site or to complete an attached document. The Web site and document request the user to provide personal information,” US-Cert—a federal government organization—said in a statement.
US-Cert urged recipients of the IRS stimulus scam to forward the messages to [email protected].
