Go Daddy, VeriSign Settle Lawsuit

Go Daddy Software, an Internet domain-name registrar, has settled its false advertising lawsuit against VeriSign Inc.

Terms were not disclosed.

The lawsuit, filed in June, alleged that VeriSign, a competing domain name registrar based in Mountain View, CA, sent misleading “Domain Name Renewal Notices” to the customers of other registrars and that the notices misled recipients into transferring their domain names to VeriSign, according to Go Daddy.

In June, a federal judge in Arizona reportedly signed an order prohibiting VeriSign from sending out those domain-name expiration notices to its customers.

The lawsuit, filed in June, alleged that VeriSign, a competing domain name registrar based in Mountain View, CA, sent misleading “Domain Name Renewal Notices” via direct mail and e-mail to the customers of other registrars, including Go Daddy, and that the notices misled recipients into transferring their domain names to VeriSign, according to Go Daddy.

In June, a federal judge in Arizona signed an order prohibiting VeriSign from sending out domain-name expiration notices to Go Daddy customers, the company said.

The mass mailings by VeriSign prompted four lawsuits and an investigation by the Federal Trade Commission. In August, VeriSign and domain name provider BulkRegister.com Inc. settled the lawsuit BulkRegister filed in May.
