Global Net Use in July 2000 Was 116 Million; 42% Shop Online

The total number of people with Internet access throughout Australia, Canada, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, the UK and the United States reached 216 million in July, up from 207 million in June. Of those, 56%, or 122 million, actually accessed the Web during July.

Nearly 52 million individuals, or more than 42% of the total population active on the Internet in July, accessed shopping sites during at-home use, while 25.7 million browsed sweepstakes or couponing sites.

The report did not indicate the amount of overlap between the two categories.

The researchers found that outside of the US, Amazon.com attracted a majority of male visitors. In the UK alone, male browsers outnumbered female visitors two to one. In America, however, females made up 54% of Amazon’s traffic.

With 51.7 million visitors in July, Shopping sites were the sixth-most-frequent destination, trailing only Search Engines/Portals (107.5 million); Telecom/Internet Services (78.5 million); Entertainment (65.9 million); Personal and Business Electronics and Software (56.1 million); and News and Information (55.7 million).

The report was released by Nielsen/NetRating, a partnership between NetRatings Inc., Nielsen Media Research and ACNielsen. Ratings were taken from 165,000 Internet users around the world, with the US panel consisting of 57,000 at-home users and 8,000 work-based users.
