“Mountaineers Are Always Free,” reads the West Virginia state motto, but an online auction for the state itself fetched nearly $100 million on eBay before company officials took notice and ended the sale.
According to wire service reports, a spokesperson for eBay said that the seller was not in possession of the goods being offered, in violation of eBay policy.
The report also cited part of the seller’s pitch. The seller, who was trading under the name fishstuffnthings, cautioned:
“Please note that this auction does not come with governing rites, nor the inhabitants of said property. You also may not change the state flag, bird, or so on. This is merely for bragging rights, or to hang a sign in your garage that says, ‘I own West Virginia,’” according to the report.
The actual lot has been removed from the eBay site as of late Wednesday.
When the auction was terminated, the item had registered 56 bids, including one from high bidder nosnam1488.
