Forensics Equipment Placed on “CSI” TV Show

Cue the liquid handling DNA workstation.

The featured performers in investigative forensic police shows are not just the scientists delving into details about DNA matching.

A recent episode of “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” co-starred the Tecan Freedom EVO 150 liquid handling workstation, a device that enables automated extraction of DNA.

Sheila Thomas, product integrator for the CBS drama, approached the company about using the device on the series after law enforcement agencies and forensic experts recommended the device to the show. “We like to stay on the cutting edge by asking for the recommendations of current crime scene investigators who are out in the field every day,” Thomas said, in a statement.

After receiving the request, Tecan engineers configured the Freedom EVO for automated DNA extraction and sent it to Hollywood for installation in the “CSI” lab.

The director got the workstation in the act of extraction in one take in the two-hour special episode that aired last fall.
