Up until now, the use of hashtags on Facebook has been sort of #annoying and #pointless, since the biggest social network in the world doesn’t currently turn hashtags into functional conversation organizers. Well, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Facebook is working on giving life to hashtags on its site, taking a step out of Twitter’s playbook.
“Facebook is testing whether to follow Twitter’s lead and allow users to click on a hashtag to pull up all posts about similar topics or events so it can quickly index conversations around trending topics and build those conversations up, giving users more reason to stay logged in and see more ads,” according to the WSJ report, which notes that Facebook-owned Instagram already utilizes hashtags.
While this move would be useful for its users, it would be another revenue channel for Facebook to milk. It would also turn up the heat on the battle between Facebook and Twitter for budgets allocated to social media spending.
On Wednesday, Twitter announced some updates to its Twitter Ads center, including reporting all engagements for Promoted Tweets and more detailed data in campaign reporting.
