EU Proposes Ban on Tobacco Ads

The Brussels-based European Commission has proposed new restrictions on tobacco advertising, reports said.

The proposed rules call for outlawing cigarette ads in newspapers, magazines and at international sports events around the European Union. The rules would also ban tobacco ads on radio and on the Internet.

A previous ban was overturned last fall after a court challenge by the German government, tobacco firms and advertising companies.

The EU health commissioner was quoted as saying he thought the new rules would be approved by EU governments and withstand court challenges.
