EC Warns Europe’s Postal Monopolies

Europe’s postal monopolies may have difficulty with the European Commission, if they continue to expand into commercial activities, according to wire service reports. Hubert Ungerer, head of the EC’s postal unit of the competition division, suggested on Friday that the EC might reexamine the monopolies with the most aggressive policies.

While most governments grant their postal service the monopoly on delivering certain types or classes of mail, EU law requires the governments justify the grants.
