The European Commission widened an antitrust investigation into Deutsche Post AG, charging that the post office abused its dominance in Germany to squeeze rivals out of the mail order parcels market, according to Reuters.
The EC uncovered new evidence showing that Deutsche Post had contracts with mail order customers offering loyalty and target rebates.
These arrangements mean discounts are conditional on customers shipping all their parcels through Deutsche Post as well as sending an annual minimum volume through its parcel service.
“This means that no private provider of parcel services to mail order firms has been able to achieve any firm foothold in Germany,” a Commission statement said.
