E-commerce Holiday Spending Soaring: comScore

E-commerce spending for the first 41 days of the 2007 holiday shopping season — Nov. 1 to Dec. 11 — totaled more than $20 billion, a 19% gain over the same period last year, online measurement firm comScore reported last week.

The heaviest online shopping day as of last week was Monday, Dec. 10, during which consumers spent $881 million online, according to comScore. This was up 33% over the corresponding Monday last year and set a record as the heaviest online shopping day in history, comScore said.

Other top online holiday shopping days so far this year were Tuesday, Dec. 11 with $819 million, Thursday Dec. 6 with $802 million, Wednesday Dec. 5 with $798 million, and Tuesday, Dec. 4 with $776 million, according to comScore.

“Online spending is following the pattern it first established last year, namely an accelerating growth rate as the season progresses,” said comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni in a statement. “Consumers are clearly responding positively to the enticing promotions and discounts being offered by retailers this year, and spending is currently on track to meet our forecast of $29.5 billion for the season.”
