The national Do-Not-Call Registry, maintain and enforced by the Federal Trade Commission, has reached a milestone: topping 100 million phone numbers. The registry opened for business just over two years ago.
“While millions of citizens have chosen to limit the number of unwanted telemarketing calls they receive, thousands of businesses are able to target their calls to people who want to receive them,” said FTC Chairman Deborah Platt Majoras in a statement. “Industry compliance continues to be high, and registration remains free and easy.”
The creation of the list had been challenged by a number of associations and organizations, including the Direct Marketing Association and the American Teleservices Association, who called it a violation of free speech. But last October, the U.S. Supreme Court let stand a lower-court ruling that telemarketer’s rights to free speech were not violated by the national Do-Not-Call Registry, upholding the popular list as constitutional.
