Do-Not-Call Bill Planned in Ohio

An Ohio legislator will today introduce a bill that would establish a state do-not registry.

State Sen. Robert Spade (R-North Royalton) said in a statement that he wants to give consumers “a choice in limiting the telephone calls they receive without having to go to the expense of leasing or purchasing special equipment to do so.”

The bill would prohibit the calling of any home telephone, cell phone or fax number listed on the registry. It would also restrict the use of automated dialing systems that leave consumers talking to dead air.

Consumers would be able to sign up for the registry without charge via toll-free telephone number, the Internet and mail.

Spada also wants to prohibit calls unless there is an established business relationship between the company and the consumer, his office said.

The registry would be run by the Attorney General’s office.
