Perhaps bipartisanship really has taken root in America. The list of individuals pardoned by President Clinton as he was leaving office included direct marketer A. Glenn Braswell, president of Gero Vita International, a Miami-based health products firm. Braswell marketed vitamin, health and cosmetic remedies under a variety of corporate names for more than 20 years. He’s also a major contributor to the Republican party.
According to the St. Petersburg Times, in 1983 Braswell was sentenced to three years in federal prison for felony convictions stemming from income tax evasion and perjury charges. Mail order fraud charges resulted in a five-year probation.
The mail order fraud investigation occurred in response to claims that ads for his Bio-Genesis baldness cure used false pre- and post-treatment pictures to demonstrate its effect.
Quackwatch, a medical fraud watchdog group, featured a brochure for Prostata, a Gero Vita anti-prostate enlargement remedy, in an article on its Web site. The brochure featured movie stars and sports figures who either suffered from or had died from prostate problems. Several
