Digital Coupons Doubled to More than $1 Billion

According to Coupons.com, printed savings from digital coupons doubled during the 12 months ending June 2010, with ready-to-eat cereal leading the way.

Printed savings from digital coupons exceeded $1 billion for the year ending June 2010, a 100 percent increase from $529 million in the prior year. This includes savings printed or loaded to a store loyalty card.

For the month of June alone, printed savings accumulated to more than $110 million, a record number, according to Coupons.com.

“Growth is attributed to several key factors, including continued consumer adoption of online printable, save to store loyalty card and mobile coupons and increased use of digital coupons by brand marketers, including manufacturers and retailers alike,” according to the company’s press release.

Meanwhile, Coupons.com notes that recent research has found that coupons distributed via the old fashioned free-standing inserts grew just 8.4 percent for the same 12-month period.

The Internet was the fastest growing distribution channel for coupons in the first half of the year, according to NCH Marketing Services. More than a fifth of the country’s population, or 46.4 million American consumers, now use online coupons, up from 40.2 million in 2008. Of this group, 12.9 million don’t read any part of the Sunday paper.

Coupons.com also notes that Google searches for “printable coupons” rose 67 percent during the past year.

To profile the typical digital-coupon user, the company used recent reports and data to find that consumers who print digital coupons have an estimated average household income of $96,000, 14 percent higher than the U.S. average.

Also, 33.4 percent of consumers who print digital coupons have a college degree, up from 30.4 percent in 2008.
