Court Stops Advance-Fee Credit Card Scam

A federal court has temporarily halted the business practices of a Canadian company charged by the Federal Trade Commission with operating an advance-fee scheme that bilked U.S. consumers out of $5 million.

According to the FTC, the defendants, operating under several names, never provided consumers with the promised major credit cards and are not authorized by VISA or MasterCard to issue credit cards to the public.

The scheme targeted U.S. consumers with no credit or bad credit for upfront fees ranging from $175 to $199 by authorizing debits from consumers
