Citigroup Closing Arizona Call Center, Firing 482

Citigroup is firing 482 telemarketing reps and shutting down some call center operations in Tempe, AZ just as it further expands its offshore presence in India, according to the Phoenix Business Journal.

Specifically, Citicorp Credit Services and Citicards Inc. are axing the workers. A full 232 employees will be laid off in June and another 250 in July.

The firings coincide with Citigroup’s full acquisition of the Indian outsourcing firm, E-Serve International. Citigroup previously owned a minority share of E-Serve and was its main client.

Citigroup officials in New York and Tempe did not return repeated telephone calls.

Some of the layoffs are from operations that handled customer-service requests related to Sears credit cards, which Citigroup acquired last November. Citigroup is also closing other Sears financial call centers and cutting non-Sears credit operations in other U.S. markets.
