Catalog Efficiencies Help Brookstone Trim Third Quarter Loss

Third quarter sales for Brookstone Inc. rose to $73.7 million from $62.8 million a year ago. While the company did not release total net loss figures, it said that its loss had been trimmed from 52 cents per share to between 45 and 47 cents per share. The company traditionally carries a loss during the first three quarters and makes a profit in the fourth quarter, according to a company statement.

The specialty products retailer said that its direct marketing sales rose 6.9% in third quarter 2003 over third quarter 2002, to $13.4 million, despite an 8.1% decrease in catalog circulation.
