Canada PM Intervening in Direct Mail Delivery Dispute

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper was set to meet with the head of Canada Post to hear what solutions are being offered to rural residents who are losing direct mail delivery, according to wire service reports.

Fears that rural mail delivery could be wiped out were sparked by Canada Post’s decision to set up centralized community mailboxes in areas it where has received safety complaints from rural carriers.

The issue has come up because many rural and suburban mail carriers have invoked their right to refuse unsafe work conditions in the last few months. Health and safety concerns include high traffic roads with narrow shoulders and repetitive stress injuries from leaning to the opposite side of the car through the window to deliver mail to mailboxes.
